The word “bong” is derived from the Thai word ‘baung,’ which means ‘a cylindrical wooden tube, pipe or container cut from bamboo.’  It may be called by many different names.

The thought of filtering your smoke through water, apparently is not new.  Bongs have been around for a very long time.  There is evidence of bongs going back in the African Peninsula originating with an Earth Bong which was a vessel built into the ground. Water pipes were also found on the Russian Continent in ruins from the Scythian’s as far back as 2400 years ago.  They were used by the Ming Dynasty in China and all over the Middle East as depicted in art and historical renderings of all type.

Today’s bongs have gotten quite complex.  Between the build your own bongs where you can custom design your equipment to ones with Ice catchers and extra filtration chambers there is a lot to choose from.  Ask a bong smoker and they will tell you the features they enjoy and depend on.

One of the challenges with a bong, like any smoking devise is keeping it clean. We all know those folks that pass us those smelly filthy bongs, killing the flavour of the kind. Some bongs have ash catchers to keep the ashes out of the main chambers.  Many stores offer brushes you can use to scrub your bong.  The build a bongs can be taken apart of easy cleaning.

Then there are the products out there to help you clean your bong, such as 420 and Orange Crush. Keeping the bong clean can also be helped with a product called Rezblock which prevents the residue from sticking to the bong.  If you have a very elaborate bong a product like Rezblock will save you from quite a bit of frustration.

Bongs have their own culture. Some people will share a bong, passing it after each pull waiting for someone to get the ‘carc’ or ending hit of ash. Others will wait till they clear the bowl considering it bad etiquette to pass a less then perfect bowl.  You can get different size bowls for different size hits, so you can pack a party bowl for guests to share.
